A PhD gave me the chance to dive deeper into a subject I care about and build a strong foundation for a research career
Sam Conway | Abertay University | PhD in Psychology

After completing undergraduate and postgraduate studies, Sam Conway wanted to take the next step in psychological research -exploring and developing practical solutions that could make a real difference in the criminal justice system. That ambition led to a PhD at Abertay, where innovative technology meets youth justice and policing practice. He said:

I wanted to contribute something meaningful to the field and challenge myself. Having previously studied at Abertay, I knew the university offered a supportive academic community. The staff are approachable and encouraging, and I felt confident I’d have the freedom to shape my PhD around my interests.

Before starting the PhD, Sam worked as a support worker in the homeless sector in Glasgow, providing practical and emotional support to individuals facing complex challenges, including mental health crises and addiction. He continued in this role part-time while studying. During his undergraduate degree, Sam also volunteered to offer advice and guidance to victims of crime—an experience that deepened his understanding of the importance of psychological support.

Sam’s PhD research explored the use of human and non-human avatars as a forensic interviewing tool for adolescents. The project examined whether disclosing an eyewitness event to a virtual avatar interviewer could influence the accuracy and openness of adolescent testimony.

This was a proof of concept. Could these technologies become an alternative special measure to support young people in the criminal justice system? Networking with schools, police officers, and social workers added real-world depth - their perspectives were invaluable and helped ground my research in practice.

Connecting with academics and students from diverse backgrounds was a highlight, and presenting at conferences gave Sam the chance to travel to new places and opened doors to collaborations he never imagined.

Sam has since transitioned into a full-time research role in the forensic and criminal justice field, excited to apply the skills he developed and contribute to work that truly aligns with his interests.

Pick a research area you’re passionate about. There will be stressful moments, but genuine interest makes the tough times manageable and keeps you motivated.
