Abertay’s online MBA with Cybersecurity equipped me with leadership skills, strategic thinking, and specialised cybersecurity expertise—all while managing the challenges of a full-time role and personal commitments.
Claire Macdonald | Abertay University | MBA with Cybersecurity

When Claire Macdonald decided to take the next step in her professional career, she explored several options before choosing Abertay. The online MBA with Cybersecurity offered everything she needed: affordability, a flexible structure with clear deadlines, and the option to pay in instalments. Self-funding meant that flexibility was essential, and Abertay’s strong reputation in technical subjects sealed the decision.

Studying online gave Claire the flexibility to fit learning into a busy schedule. As Head of Clinical Data Science at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, she worked full-time in a demanding role while also caring for a family member—so evenings and weekends became her study time, with short bursts during mornings or lunch breaks. The mini-lecture format made this manageable, and weekly check-ins from the Student Liaison team kept her connected and supported throughout the journey.

The course content proved immediately relevant to her role. Some modules refreshed existing knowledge, while others introduced new concepts that changed how she approached her work. The MBA modules strengthened her understanding of corporate functions, while the Cybersecurity content boosted her confidence in managing technical security and governance—skills she now shares with her team.

She said:

The learning platform was intuitive and the discussion boards became invaluable for exchanging ideas and resources with fellow students. My peers became a great source of academic references and practical tips.

Her journey wasn’t without challenges. Studying full-time while balancing caring duties was demanding, and an unexpected illness added pressure. Claire considered withdrawing, but Abertay’s flexibility and supportive staff helped her through. Extensions and understanding lecturers allowed her to catch up and complete the course successfully.

Just before graduation, Claire’s achievements were recognised nationally when she won Team Leader of the Year at the Women in Tech Excellence Awards in London, a testament to her leadership and impact in the tech space.

Completing the MBA has already paid off. Claire used her new knowledge to develop strategies and lead projects that improved her team’s processes. It also inspired her to keep learning—she’s now studying for a third master’s degree and has been offered a PhD opportunity.

Claire shared some advice for anyone unsure about pursuing an online degree:

If you are considering applying, just do it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Yes, it will disrupt your life for a while, but it’s temporary, and the results are worth it. If you’re juggling multiple commitments, Abertay makes learning accessible, affordable, and flexible enough to fit modern life. I have no regrets—it’s added so much to my professional skills and personal growth.
